I stumbled across IGN's list of the top 100 animated series this evening. The link I followed was for Avatar at #35, and I worked my way up to #1 and then back down to #100. Some American-aired anime made the list, and as I neared the end I was distressed that I hadn't seen Fullmetal Alchemist on there yet. It finally did show up at #95, which isn't where I would have put it, but by that point I had long since realized that they weren't in an order even close to how I'd rank them, so that was no big deal - I was just happy it made the list. However, then I looked at the writeup they had about it, which starts with:

"Although it's mostly an upbeat story with amazing action scenes..."

?! Upbeat? Did we watch the same show? Later in the writeup it does acknowledge the horrible misery the show heaps on the protagonists, but wow - of all the words I could choose to describe that series, "upbeat" would not be anywhere near the top of my list.
